East Webster drains Lake in game one

From Staff Reports

HATTIESBURG – None of the East Webster players have played in a state championship, but the Lady Wolverines sure acted like they've been there before in game one on Wednesday.

Taking on the Lake Lady Hornets in game one in Hattiesburg, East Webster got out to an early lead, built on it and had its veteran pitcher keep Lake off the board most of the way. It allowed for a dominant first win in the series in just six innings 14-1.

“In a situation like that, momentum is big,” Lady Wolverine head coach John Harris said. “If you don't get momentum, you're going to fall behind and be behind the eight ball with a game one loss. It was like they've been here before. They came out and played their game. They didn't let the big crowd factor in.”

East Webster (28-5) blistered the softball racking up 14 hits and eight of the batters in the lineup got a base knock with five notching multiple hits. Emma Jennings came through with a 3-for-5 afternoon getting a double and driving in a run. Peyton Flora,

Hallie Beth Reed, Addison Edwards and Nashlynn Vickers all had two hits as well.

Flora had a double and an RBI fresh off of her OCH Regional Medical Center Athlete of the Week honor on Monday when she had a triple, double and five RBI in a win over East Union. Keely Jo Mcknight and Katelee Box also had doubles for the Lady Wolverines.

A three-run top of the first for East Webster before Lake could even get a blink was what set the tone. Flora, Jennings and Abby Williams put together three-straight hits to start the game to get the first two runs and Reed singled home Williams with two outs to make it 3-0.

In the third inning, Box got things started with a double to right field and Reed did her job yet again as she bunted the run home to make it 4-0.

Lake had its chance to do some damage in the fourth inning against East Webster pitcher Liz Massey. A walk and three-straight singles with one out cut into the lead at 4-1, but Massey came back and got a force out at
