Pep rally set for Brown, Gay

There will be a Citywide Pep Rally for former Starkville High School football players AJ Brown and Willie Gay on Saturday at Yellow Jacket Stadium.

The rally will take place from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free and the gates will open at 1 p.m. Brown and Gay will be playing in Sunday's Super Bowl. Brown is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and Gay is on the roster of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Volunteers see hoops seasons end

MENDENHALL – The basketball seasons came to an end for the Starkville Academy teams on Wednesday night at the Class 5A North State Tournament at Simpson Academy.

Both the Vols and Lady Vols had the tough task of playing the host school in the first round round.

Starkville Academy's girls lost 54-41, while the boys dropped a 49-33 decision.

Sara Stokes Mcreynolds led the Lady Vols with 14 points. Starkville Academy finished with a record of 13-19.

The Vols had a winning record of 16-11.

Starkville Christian boys get win

LOUISVILLE – The Starkville Christian Cougars rallied from a 10-point deficit with 3:30 remaining in Tuesday night's boys basketball game at Grace Christian and won a 55-54 decision in Tri State Christian Conference action.

Alex Hunley led the Cougars with 15 points, while Art Meek chipped in 10 points.

Starkville Christian improved its records to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

The Lady Cougars did not fare well in their attempt to get a win against the Lady Eagles. Starkville Christian lost its first conference game of the season 36-17.

It was a cold shooting night for the Lady Cougars as they only made 2-of-39 shots from the field and missed all 11 of their 3-point field goal attempts.

Lana Ballard had 10 points for Starkville Christian, which fell to 12-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

The Lady Cougars are the No. 2 seed in the conference, while the SCS boys are the No. 4 seed. The postseason takes place next week.

Vols lose baseball opener on road

FLOWOOD – Starkville Academy lost a 2-1 decision to Hartfield Academy in its baseball season opener on Monday night.

Drew Williams worked five innings on the mound of the Vols. He only allowed one hit and no runs during his stint while striking out 10 and having no walks.

Wyatt Hedges threw one inning in relief.

Jake Lockhart, Major Smith, and Briggs Bennett had two hits each for Starkville Academy with Smith and Lockhart getting one double each.

The Vols were scheduled to play at Lamar School on Tuesday, but presumably that game was rained out.
